Solar Panel Maintenance Guide: What You Actually Need to Do

Sarah Thompson

Energy Analyst, Yeers

Solar panels have no moving parts, which means they genuinely do require very little maintenance. But "very little" is not zero — and the difference between a well-maintained system and a neglected one can amount to thousands of pounds over a 25-year lifespan.

What Maintenance Do Solar Panels Actually Need?

In the UK, rain handles most panel cleaning automatically. However, coastal areas (including Hull, Bridlington, and Grimsby) accumulate salt deposits that rain doesn't fully shift. Urban areas near heavy traffic or industry (Sheffield, Leeds industrial zones) see faster soiling from particulate matter. Agricultural areas (East Riding, Selby) can suffer from bird droppings and pollen accumulation in spring.

Beyond cleaning, a properly maintained solar system requires:

  • Annual inverter check: Verifying error logs, efficiency metrics, and firmware is current.
  • String/micro-inverter output comparison: A failing cell or panel shows as a drop in one string's output. Without monitoring, this goes undetected for months.
  • Mounting and fixings inspection: Particularly important after winter storms. Loose brackets allow water ingress and panel movement.
  • MCS compliance check: Required if you're operating under the Smart Export Guarantee or any grant conditions.

When Does Panel Cleaning Make Financial Sense?

Studies show soiling reduces output by 5–25% depending on location and time since last cleaning. In Yorkshire, a dirty system in August might be generating 12% less than a clean one. For a 4kW system generating 3,400 kWh/year, 12% is 408 kWh — worth around £98 at current electricity prices. Professional cleaning costs £60–£120, making it a straightforward financial decision once or twice a year.

Warning Signs Your System Needs Attention

  • Inverter error codes or flashing amber/red LED
  • Generation dropping more than 10% compared to the same month last year
  • Monitoring app showing mismatched string outputs
  • Physical damage to panels visible from ground level (dark spots, cracks, delamination)
  • Battery failing to reach full charge on sunny days

YEERS Solar Health Check

YEERS offers an annual solar health check covering all of the above for systems we've installed, and for third-party installations. We carry out inverter diagnostics, panel performance testing, and issue a written report. For MCS-warranted systems, an annual health check is recommended to preserve any performance guarantees.
