Why Add Battery Storage to Your Solar System?

Solar panels are a superb investment — but they generate power when you are often out at work. Without a battery, approximately 70% of the electricity your panels generate is exported to the grid at 4-15p/kWh. You then buy it back in the evening at 27-35p/kWh. A battery storage system changes this equation completely.

By storing your midday solar generation in a battery, you can power your home through the evening using electricity that cost you nothing to generate. A good 10kWh battery system increases your solar self-consumption from approximately 30% to 70-80% — that is the difference between saving £350/year and saving £900/year on energy bills.

YEERS installs cutting-edge battery technology across Hull, York, Leeds, and throughout the Yorkshire region. Whether you need a retrofit AC-coupled battery for an existing solar array or a brand-new hybrid DC-coupled system, we design the perfect solution around your home and lifestyle.

Smart Tariffs: The Battery Storage Multiplier

Pairing battery storage with a smart time-of-use tariff like Octopus Agile or Octopus Intelligent dramatically improves your battery's financial performance. Agile tariffs vary electricity prices every 30 minutes based on the wholesale market. During periods of high renewable generation (typically 2-5am), prices can drop to 1-3p/kWh — sometimes even negative (you get paid to use electricity). During evening peaks (5-8pm), prices can reach 40-60p/kWh.

A 10kWh battery charged at 2p/kWh overnight and discharged at 35p/kWh in the evening saves approximately £1.10 per cycle from tariff arbitrage alone. Over 365 days, that is £400/year — on top of your solar self-consumption savings. YEERS configures your battery system to automatically optimise for your specific tariff through the battery management system app.

Battery + Solar + EV: The Complete System

The most financially optimised home energy setup in 2026 combines solar panels, battery storage, and an EV charger. Your solar panels generate free electricity during the day; the battery stores the excess; your car charges from the battery at night using free solar electricity. The average EV driver adding solar-charged home charging saves an additional £900-£1,400/year compared to public charging or grid-rate home charging. YEERS designs integrated systems that coordinate all three technologies intelligently.

Our EV charger installation service includes full integration with your solar and battery system, including solar export detection, off-peak grid charging, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) readiness where applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does solar battery storage cost in Yorkshire?

Battery storage prices in Yorkshire range from £3,495 for a retrofit AC-coupled 3.6kWh unit (works with any existing solar system) up to £12,000+ for a large 15kWh premium system with integrated solar inverter. A typical 10kWh Sigenergy system with integrated hybrid inverter costs around £8,495 fully installed. All residential battery installations benefit from 0% VAT until March 2027, saving approximately £1,700 on a typical system. YEERS provides fixed-price quotes with no hidden costs — all electrical certification and app setup included.

What is the best solar battery storage system in 2026?

The best battery storage system depends on your circumstances. For whole-home backup and maximum capability, Sigenergy is our premium recommendation — it integrates the solar inverter and battery into one unit, offers genuine whole-home backup (including your boiler), and has excellent smart EV charging integration. For value, the Solax Triple Power X3-HYB system offers excellent performance at a lower price point and works well with Octopus Agile. For a retrofit onto an existing solar system without changing the inverter, Fox ESS or Growatt AC-coupled batteries provide excellent performance-per-pound. YEERS is brand-agnostic — we recommend what is right for your home and budget.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Yes. There are two approaches depending on your existing inverter. If your current string inverter is hybrid-compatible (e.g. Solax, Fox ESS, SolarEdge), we can add a DC-coupled battery directly — this is more efficient. If your inverter is not compatible (common with older SMA, Fronius, or Solis units), we install an AC-coupled battery (like the Sigenergy AC Battery or Fox ESS AC system) which connects after the inverter. AC coupling has a small efficiency penalty (typically 3-5%) but works with any inverter. YEERS conducts a free compatibility check before recommending a solution.

How much will a battery storage system save me on energy bills?

A battery storage system typically increases your solar self-consumption from approximately 30-35% (panels only) to 70-80%, dramatically reducing the amount of electricity you import from the grid. For an average Yorkshire household spending £1,500/year on electricity, this translates to annual savings of £400-£600 from increased self-consumption, plus additional savings of £200-£400 if you use a smart time-of-use tariff like Octopus Agile to charge the battery cheaply at night. Combined with solar panels, a battery system can reduce your electricity bill by 70-80%. Payback periods for batteries alone are typically 12-16 years, but when bundled with a new solar system, the combined payback drops to 9-12 years.

What size battery storage do I need for my home in Hull or Yorkshire?

For a typical 3-4 bedroom home in Yorkshire with a 4kW solar array, a 5-10kWh battery is usually optimal. A 5kWh battery covers your evening usage on a typical summer day; a 10kWh battery is better matched for autumn and winter when you want to store more over a longer winter night. If you have an EV, we recommend 10kWh+ as you may want to charge the car from the battery overnight. For homes with higher-than-average consumption (home workers, large families), 15kWh systems offer greater flexibility. YEERS designs each system around your actual smart meter data from the previous 12 months for an accurate recommendation.

Can a battery storage system power my home during a power cut?

Yes, but it depends on which system you choose and how it is configured. The Sigenergy system offers full whole-home EPS (Emergency Power Supply) — when the grid goes down, the battery seamlessly switches to islanded mode within milliseconds, keeping your entire home powered including high-power appliances like electric showers and ovens (subject to battery capacity). The Solax system offers a dedicated EPS output circuit (typically a separate socket), which can power essential appliances but not your whole home. Fox ESS systems offer configurable backup power. YEERS discusses your backup power requirements during the design stage so your system is correctly specified.

Does battery storage affect my Smart Export Guarantee payments?

No. Your Smart Export Guarantee entitlement is based on the electricity you export to the grid, which is measured at your export meter. A battery storage system stores electricity you generate but do not immediately use — it does not affect your SEG payments on energy you genuinely export. In fact, by consuming more of your own generation, a battery may modestly reduce your SEG export income but increases your financial savings by a greater amount (since self-consumed electricity is worth more than export payments — approximately 27p/kWh self-consumed vs 4-15p/kWh exported).

Is battery storage worth it without solar panels?

Battery storage without solar panels can still save money if you use a smart time-of-use tariff. On Octopus Agile or similar tariffs, electricity prices vary by half-hour slot, dropping to 2-5p/kWh at 3-4am and peaking at 35-50p/kWh at 6-7pm. A battery charged at the cheap overnight rate and discharged during peak times can save £400-£700/year depending on your consumption pattern. However, this requires a battery with daily cycle capability and good round-trip efficiency (90%+). YEERS provides ROI modelling for grid-only battery scenarios. The economics are strongest with solar but work without.

How long do solar batteries last?

Modern lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry used in Sigenergy, Fox ESS, and Solax systems has a rated lifespan of 6,000-10,000 cycles, which translates to approximately 16-27 years of daily cycling. Battery warranties reflect this: Sigenergy offers a 10-year/6,000-cycle warranty; Solax Triple Power offers 10 years/6,000 cycles; Fox ESS offers a 10-year warranty. At end of warranty, batteries are typically still operating at 70-80% of original capacity — they do not fail suddenly. YEERS includes a 10-year workmanship warranty on all battery installations.

Can I get a grant for battery storage in Yorkshire?

Currently, there is no standalone government grant specifically for battery storage. However, 0% VAT applies to battery storage when installed alongside solar panels (or as part of a solar system), saving approximately 20% on cost. If you are eligible for ECO4, battery storage may be included as part of a funded package in some circumstances. The Warm Homes Plan (ECO4's successor, expected mid-2026) is expected to include battery storage as a fundable measure. If you also have an EV, some EV charger grant schemes allow combined solar-battery-EV charger installations. Contact YEERS to discuss the best funding route for your situation.

What are the differences between Sigenergy, Solax, and Fox ESS batteries?

Sigenergy: Premium German-designed system with fully integrated solar inverter and battery. Unique 'SigenStor' architecture allows every battery module to have its own microinverter, maximising efficiency. Genuine whole-home EPS backup. 10-year warranty. Best for: new solar+battery installations, EV owners, customers wanting whole-home backup. From £8,495. Best for: budget-conscious customers, Octopus Agile users, retrofit onto Solax inverters. Fox ESS: British-Chinese brand with excellent UK support. H3 Pro Hybrid inverter pairs with ECS series batteries (5-25kWh). 10-year warranty. From £4,995 for 10kWh. Best for: good value, modular expansion, retrofit-compatible.

Will a battery storage system add value to my Yorkshire home?

Yes, evidence is building that solar plus battery systems add measurable value to properties. The Nationwide Building Society confirmed in 2023 that solar panels add an average of 4.8% to property values. Battery storage adds a further premium, particularly as more buyers understand the ongoing savings potential. Estate agents in Hull, Leeds, and York increasingly cite solar and battery systems as a selling point. For properties being sold in an energy-conscious market, a 4kW solar + 10kWh battery installation can add £8,000-£15,000 to sale price depending on the area, comparable to or exceeding the initial installation cost for properties at the higher end.

Which Battery Brand Should You Choose in 2026?

Most homeowners comparing quotes across Hull, Sheffield and wider Yorkshire end up choosing between four systems. Here is how they stack up on the numbers that actually matter (indicative — verified July 2026):

Brand & modelUsable capacityWhole-home backupWarrantyTypical installed £/kWh
Sigenergy SigenStor8–48 kWh (stackable 8 kWh modules)Yes — built-in gateway option10 years£800–£950
Solax Triple Power5.8–23 kWhYes — with EPS/gateway10 years£700–£850
GivEnergy All in One13.5 kWh (stackable)Yes — with Giv-Gateway12 years£750–£900
Sunsynk (with 5.12 kWh packs)5.1–20 kWhPartial — essential circuits10 years (7 on some packs)£700–£820

If you are torn between the top two, our head-to-head Sigenergy vs Solax comparison covers charge rates, app quality and expandability in detail, and our guide to the best solar batteries UK ranks every system we install this year.

Retrofit vs New-Install: The Economics

Adding a battery to an existing solar array is cheaper than most people expect — and since February 2024, standalone battery retrofits qualify for 0% VAT just like new solar-plus-battery installs (the zero rate runs until 31 March 2027, after which it is due to revert to 5%).

ScenarioTypical cost (10 kWh usable)Annual savingSimple payback
Battery retrofit (AC-coupled) to existing 4kW solar£7,000–£9,500£650–£9008–11 years
New 4kW solar + battery installed together£13,000–£17,000£1,100–£1,5009–12 years
Battery only, no solar (tariff arbitrage)£7,000–£9,000£500–£8509–13 years

Figures are indicative — verified July 2026, based on ~3,400–3,650 kWh/yr Yorkshire generation and installed costs of roughly £700–£950 per usable kWh.

Octopus Tariff Arbitrage: A Worked Example

Even without solar, a battery earns its keep on a smart tariff. Take a 13.5 kWh usable battery on Intelligent Octopus Go (indicative rates — verified July 2026):

  • Charge 12 kWh overnight at ~7p/kWh = 84p
  • Discharge that 12 kWh through the day, avoiding ~27p/kWh grid electricity = £3.24 avoided
  • Net daily saving ≈ £2.40, or roughly £850–£875 a year before any solar contribution or SEG export income (SEG rates vary widely — indicatively 1p–27p/kWh, with Octopus currently paying some of the strongest; an MCS certificate and smart meter are required)

Pair that arbitrage with self-consumed solar in summer and a well-sized system routinely clears £1,200/yr in combined savings.

Local Installation Across Yorkshire

YEERS installs all four brands above from our Hull base, covering Yorkshire and Lincolnshire with MCS-certified engineers and a 10-year workmanship warranty on every install. Frequently asked questions

Is it worth adding a battery to my existing solar panels?

Usually, yes. A 10 kWh usable retrofit battery typically costs £7,000–£9,500 installed at 0% VAT and saves £650–£900 a year by storing surplus solar and cheap off-peak electricity, giving a simple payback of 8–11 years — well within a 10–12 year product warranty. It works best if you regularly export solar you could be using yourself.

Do batteries qualify for 0% VAT in the UK?

Yes. Domestic battery storage has been zero-rated for VAT since February 2024, including standalone batteries fitted without solar panels. The 0% rate runs until 31 March 2027 under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, after which it is due to revert to 5% — so installing before that date locks in the saving.

Can I make money with a battery on an Octopus tariff?

You can cut bills substantially. Charging a 13.5 kWh battery overnight at around 7p/kWh and using that stored power instead of ~27p/kWh daytime electricity saves roughly £2.40 a day — about £850 a year — before any solar savings or SEG export income. Octopus currently offers some of the strongest export rates, though you need an MCS-certified installation and a smart meter.

How big a battery do I need for a typical Yorkshire home?

Most three-bedroom homes in Hull, Sheffield and wider Yorkshire use 8–12 kWh overnight and in the evening, so a 9–13.5 kWh usable battery is the sweet spot. Homes with heat pumps, EV chargers or high evening usage often benefit from stackable systems like Sigenergy or GivEnergy that can grow to 20 kWh and beyond.

Which battery brand has the best warranty?

GivEnergy currently leads on paper with a 12-year warranty on its All in One unit, while Sigenergy, Solax and Sunsynk all offer 10 years on their main residential systems. Warranty terms differ on cycle counts and retained capacity, so compare those details — and YEERS backs every install with its own 10-year workmanship warranty on top.

Will a battery keep my power on during a power cut?

Only if it is installed with backup capability. Sigenergy, Solax and GivEnergy systems can run whole-home backup when fitted with the appropriate gateway, while Sunsynk setups typically back up essential circuits only. Backup must be specified at design stage — it is not automatic — so tell your installer if power-cut resilience matters to you.
