What is ECO4?
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is a £4 billion government initiative designed to tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions. It obligates large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency upgrades for eligible households.
Unlike previous schemes, ECO4 takes a "Whole House Approach". It doesn't just fund a single measure; it aims to improve your property's EPC rating by at least two bands. This means you could receive a package of upgrades worth tens of thousands of pounds—completely free of charge.
Eligibility Criteria
1. Property Efficiency
Your home must have an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G.
2. Benefits or Income
You (or someone living with you) receive a qualifying benefit like Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Housing Benefit.
3. LA Flex
Even if you don't receive benefits, you may qualify through "Local Authority Flexibility" if your household income is below £31,000 or you have health conditions made worse by the cold.
Available Measures
Depending on your property survey, funding can cover:
- Solar PV: Free solar panels to generate your own electricity.
- Air Source Heat Pumps: Replacing old gas boilers or electric storage heaters with renewable heating.
- Insulation: Loft, Cavity Wall, Room-in-Roof, and Internal Wall Insulation (IWI).
- First Time Central Heating: For homes that have never had a central heating system.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
Don't qualify for ECO4? You can still access the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This provides a £7,500 grant to any homeowner in England & Wales replacing a fossil fuel boiler with a heat pump. It is not means-tested. Yeers handles the grant application and deducts it from your quote upfront.
