Is there a government grant for EV charger installation?
The OZEV Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) is no longer open to homeowners. However, the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) still provides up to £500 per socket (max 40 sockets, until 31 March 2027) for businesses, charities and small accommodation providers. We are OZEV-approved installers and can apply for the WCS on your behalf.
How long does EV charger installation take?
Most home installations take half a day — typically 3–4 hours. A site survey is usually completed within 2–3 days of enquiry, and installation follows within 1–2 weeks. Commercial or multi-bay installations with load balancing take longer and require a dedicated survey. We provide full OZEV certification on completion.
Can I install an EV charger if I live in a flat or don't own my home?
It depends on access to a dedicated parking space and landlord permission. For rental properties, landlords may qualify for commercial grants through the WCS. Shared building installations are possible with management company agreement. We can advise on your specific situation and draft a letter to your landlord or freeholder if needed.
What is load balancing and do I need it?
Load balancing ensures your EV charger never exceeds your property's maximum supply capacity, preventing tripped fuses when multiple high-demand appliances run simultaneously. Who Can Legally Install a Home EV Charger in England?

The rules are about the electrical work rather than the charger. In England, installing a new circuit or replacing a consumer unit in a home is notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations (Approved Document P, 2013 edition). A charger fed by its own new circuit falls into that category, so the work has to be certified in one of three ways:

  • A registered competent person. An electrician registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify that the work complies and, if needed, will tell your local authority about it on your behalf. Approved Document P says registered installers should complete a BS 7671 electrical installation certificate for every job. gov.uk says you will also get a certificate that can be used as evidence of compliance, and that it will show up in solicitors' searches if you come to sell your home.
  • A registered third-party certifier. An installer who is not registered can appoint a registered third-party certifier, before work begins, to inspect and test the work.
  • Building control. Otherwise the work is certified by a building control body.

gov.uk warns that without approval you will not have the certificates of compliance you may need when you want to sell your home, and that the person doing the work could be prosecuted and fined if they do not comply with the building regulations. The practical check is simple: ask any installer, including us, which competent person scheme they belong to, then look them up on that scheme's register. gov.uk points homeowners to the Electrical Competent Person Register. The standards the work is built to

Approved Document P says electrical installations should be designed and installed in accordance with BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. EV charging has its own part of BS 7671: Section 722, Electric Vehicle Charging Installations. Among other things, the IET notes that it requires each charging point to have its own RCD of at least Type A, rated at no more than 30mA, and that it restricts the use of a PME earth for charging outdoors unless one of its listed methods is used. Alongside BS 7671, the IET publishes its Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation. The fifth edition (2023) is aligned with BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 and ENA Engineering Recommendation G12/4, and the IET describes it as essential reading for all installers of EV charging units. Since 30 June 2022, chargers installed at homes and workplaces in England, Scotland and Wales have also had to meet the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021.

Telling the network operator

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) notes that an EV is likely to be the largest single electricity draw in a home. It says property owners are required to apply to their distribution network operator (DNO) to install an EV charge point, so the DNO can make sure the local network copes with the extra demand. Your installer completes that application for you on the ENA Connect Direct platform. The ENA lists BS 7671 regulation 132.16 (additions and alterations) and the IET EV Code of Practice among the rules that make informing the network operator the installer's responsibility.

Northern Powergrid runs the distribution network across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire. If you are not sure who your operator is, the ENA has a "Who's my network operator?" look-up. Northern Powergrid's EV charging guide (2023) says your installer assesses your supply and completes the form to notify it. In a small number of cases it may need to reinforce the network before the charger is connected, and only Northern Powergrid can increase the size of your supply. For a home, it says this could be a fuse upgrade. It does not charge Connection Offer Expenses on connect-and-notify installations. We handle the DNO notification as part of the install.

What a Zappi Installation Involves on Site

The details below come from myenergi's installation manual for the zappi v2.1 (Rev 1.8, October 2023). If a different Zappi model is being fitted, its own manual applies. They cover the safety-critical parts of the job and the sensor placement that decides whether a Zappi can divert surplus solar into your car.

1. Earthing on a PME supply

On a PME (TN-C-S) supply, myenergi explains, there is a risk of electric shock if the combined neutral and earth (PEN) conductor on the incoming supply is damaged or disconnected. The Zappi includes an additional automatic disconnection device that monitors the supply for a problem with the PEN conductor and disconnects the supply if you could get a shock. The manual says this satisfies regulation 722.411.4.1(v) of BS 7671:2018 Amendment 1:2020, which is why myenergi says a Zappi can be installed without an additional earth rod. If the customer or local regulations do require one, for instance as part of a TT earthed system, it connects to a dedicated terminal on the main circuit board.

2. The circuit and its protection

For a 32A Zappi, the manual calls for an overcurrent protective device of the next nominal size, such as 40A. It says that for compliance with Section 722 a typical installation needs dedicated dual-pole 30mA Type A RCD protection upstream of the charger, and the two can be combined in a single 40A dual-pole Type A RCBO. The Zappi itself includes 6mA DC residual current protection. The supply cable should be between 4mm² and 10mm², and the manual leaves the exact size to the installer for each job. That is why our survey looks at your consumer unit and the cable route.

3. The grid CT clamp for solar diversion

The Zappi's Eco modes need a CT (current transformer) sensor at the grid connection point, and a single-phase Zappi comes with one clip-on grid sensor. Where it goes decides whether solar diversion works:

  • It clips around the live meter tail with the arrow pointing towards the consumer unit. On a single-phase supply the neutral tail can be used instead, with the arrow reversed.
  • It must see all imported and exported power, so it goes before any junction box or Henley block. If necessary it can be fitted inside the consumer unit.
  • There can be only one grid CT per phase for the whole installation. On a three-phase supply a sensor goes on each live tail, and the neutral cannot be used.
  • If the sensor is wired the wrong way round, the Zappi's import and export readings are swapped.
  • Where a wired sensor is impractical, for example when the Zappi is fed from a sub-board and the two consumer units are in different buildings, myenergi's harvi wireless sensor avoids the cable run. Otherwise a wired CT cable can be extended up to 100m, using twisted-pair cable such as one pair of CAT5.

4. Where the supply is tight

The ENA says load limiting can allow a charge point to be installed without upgrading the home's supply. myenergi says the Zappi supports a Customer Import and Export Limitation Scheme in line with G100 (issue 2), and where G100 is required the installer must follow its G100 commissioning guidance. Frequently asked questions

Can a normal electrician install an EV charger?
Yes, provided the work meets BS 7671 and is certified properly. Where the job involves a new circuit or a replacement consumer unit it is notifiable under Part P, so the electrician must be registered with a competent person scheme, use a registered third-party certifier, or have the work certified by building control. myenergi's installation manual says electrical connection work on a Zappi may only be carried out by a competent person, and that anyone commissioning it must be suitably qualified, with knowledge and experience of electrical installations. The distribution network operator also has to be told about the charger, which the installer does through ENA Connect Direct. If you are claiming the EV chargepoint grant for renters and flat owners, the grant terms say you must use an OZEV-authorised installer.
How much will an electrician charge to install an EV charger?
We can only speak for our own pricing: home chargers on this page start from £995 installed, and our listed prices include certification and up to 10m of cable. Non-standard cable runs, wall types or consumer unit upgrades can add to that, so we confirm a fixed price after a survey. If your supply needs increasing, only the network operator can do that work; Northern Powergrid says that for a home this could be a fuse upgrade, which it describes as a small percentage of the overall cost of the charge point.
Does a Zappi need an earth rod?
Not necessarily. myenergi's installation manual says the Zappi's built-in protection against a damaged or disconnected PEN conductor on a PME supply means it can be installed without an additional earth rod. One is still fitted if the customer or local regulations require it, for example as part of a TT earthed system.

Why the Zappi Wins If You Have Solar Panels

The Zappi's signature trick is solar diversion: it monitors the electricity your panels are exporting in real time and steers that surplus straight into your car instead of selling it to the grid. SEG export rates typically pay around 1p–27p/kWh (indicative — rates vary by supplier, and Octopus is currently among the strongest), while grid electricity costs considerably more, so every diverted kilowatt-hour is worth the difference. No Solar? The Ohme Usually Makes More Sense

If you're on a smart EV tariff — Octopus Intelligent Go especially — the Ohme Home Pro's direct tariff integration lets the charger itself decide when electricity is cheapest and charge automatically in those windows, typically at low overnight rates around 7p/kWh (indicative). For a driver covering 10,000 miles a year, that can mean roughly £250–£350 in annual charging cost versus £700+ on a standard rate (indicative estimates).

7kW or 22kW?

Almost every home in Yorkshire has a single-phase supply, which caps you at 7kW — around 25–30 miles of range per hour, a full charge overnight. 22kW needs a three-phase supply; the DNO upgrade often costs £3,000–£15,000+ and most EVs can't accept 22kW AC anyway. Unless you already have three-phase (some farms and commercial premises do), 7kW is the right answer.

The OZEV Grant: Up to £500 Off — But Only for Flats and Rented Homes

The OZEV EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost, up to £500 per socket, towards installation (up from £350 on 1 April 2026), but eligibility has narrowed: it now applies to people who own and live in a flat, or who rent their home only — homeowners living in a house they own are not eligible.
