Why the Humber region suits heat pumps
Two regional characteristics matter more than anything else here.
A large off-gas-grid rural share. The villages ringing Driffield, Grimsby, Selby and the Isle of Axholme are heated substantially by oil and LPG. There is no mains gas connection to compete with, so the alternative to a heat pump is a replacement oil boiler plus a tank plus rising delivered-fuel prices. That is where the running-cost case is strongest and where our conversion rate from survey to install is highest.
A mild, maritime coastal climate. Air source heat pump efficiency falls as outdoor temperature drops. The Humber's coastal strip — Bridlington, Hornsea, Cleethorpes, Immingham — sees fewer deep-cold hours than inland northern England, so seasonal performance holds up well across a typical heating season. Coastal siting does demand marine-grade corrosion protection on the outdoor unit, which we specify as standard within roughly five miles of the shoreline.

The honest position: against mains gas, a heat pump is roughly cost-neutral and depends heavily on your tariff and on getting flow temperatures down to 45°C or lower. Against oil and LPG, the saving is real and repeatable — which is why our off-grid installs across the Wolds and the Vale of York are the ones customers report back on most positively.
If you already have solar PV, or are adding it alongside the heat pump, export payments come through the Smart Export Guarantee. SEG rates across suppliers span roughly 1p to 27p per kWh: Octopus Outgoing Fixed pays a flat 12p/kWh (the rate since 1 March 2026), while time-of-use tariffs such as Intelligent Flux and Agile Outgoing can reach around 27p at peak periods. Note that battery storage is not eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, so any battery sits outside the grant.
The £7,500 grant and how we claim it
The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards an air source heat pump for eligible homes in England and Wales. Two things to understand:
- You cannot apply yourself. The grant is claimed by the MCS-certified installer and applied to your quote. YEERS handles the Ofgem application, the voucher and the redemption — you see the deduction, not the paperwork.
- Batteries are not eligible. If you are pairing a heat pump with battery storage, the BUS covers the heat pump only.
Separately, VAT on domestic heat pump installation is 0% until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% after that date (HMRC VAT Notice 708/6). ECO4 LA Flex funding routed through local councils ran to 31 March 2026, so BUS plus the VAT relief is the live combination for 2026 installs.
What MCS certification actually guarantees
MCS certification is not a badge — it is the gate. Without an MCS-certified installer there is no BUS grant, and the design standards it enforces are the ones that decide whether your system is cheap or expensive to run:
- A room-by-room heat loss calculation to MCS 3005, not a rule-of-thumb sizing off floor area
- Emitter sizing checked against the design flow temperature, so radiators are replaced where the maths requires it
- A performance estimate issued before you commit, and a handover pack on completion
- Access to consumer-code redress if something goes wrong

Northern Powergrid notification
The distribution network operator for the entire area — Hull, East Riding, North East Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and the Selby district — is Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire). Every heat pump install must be notified to them. Most domestic units qualify for connect-and-notify, meaning we install first and submit the notification within the required window. Larger units, three-phase properties or constrained rural feeders may require prior approval before we can book the install date; we identify this at survey stage rather than on the day, so it never becomes a surprise delay.

Do I qualify for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme in the Humber region?
The grant covers eligible homes across England and Wales, so every town in our coverage area is in scope. You generally need to be replacing a fossil fuel system (gas, oil, LPG or electric) in a property with a valid EPC and no outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations. You cannot apply yourself — your MCS-certified installer claims it and deducts it from your quote. Batteries are not eligible under the scheme.
Are heat pumps worth it if my village near Grimsby or Driffield is off the gas grid?
This is the strongest case in the region. Off-grid properties currently run on oil or LPG, both of which are more expensive per unit of delivered heat than a heat pump running at a seasonal efficiency of 3.0–4.0. There is no cheap mains gas alternative to compare against, and you also lose the tank, the deliveries and the annual oil boiler service. Many of the villages around Grimsby, Driffield and Selby fall into this category.
Which council do I deal with for planning in my area?
Hull is Hull City Council; Beverley, Bridlington, Driffield, Hornsea and Goole are East Riding of Yorkshire Council; Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham are North East Lincolnshire Council; Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire Council; and Selby is North Yorkshire Council. Most domestic air source heat pumps are permitted development, but listed buildings and conservation areas — common in central Beverley and parts of Bridlington — need checking before siting is fixed.
Do I need permission from Northern Powergrid before installing a heat pump?
Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) is the DNO for the whole of East Yorkshire, Hull, northern Lincolnshire and the Selby district, and every install must be notified to them. Most single-phase domestic units are handled under connect-and-notify, meaning the notification is submitted after installation within the required window. Larger units, three-phase supplies or constrained rural feeders can require approval beforehand — we identify that at survey, not on install day.
How long does an air source heat pump installation take from first enquiry?
Typically four to eight weeks end to end. The survey usually happens within one to two weeks of enquiry, the MCS design and grant-applied quote follows within another week, and the on-site work itself takes two to four days depending on whether the cylinder location changes and how many radiators need upsizing. Northern Powergrid notification runs in parallel with scheduling rather than adding to the timeline.
