The Humber: UK's Largest Carbon Emitter
The Humber industrial cluster emits approximately 12 million tonnes of CO² per year — making it the single largest carbon-emitting region in the UK. This concentration of heavy industry, energy generation, and manufacturing creates both a challenge and an opportunity.
The Zero Carbon Humber partnership — comprising Equinor, Drax, National Grid, Mitsubishi, Centrica, SSE, British Steel, ABP, and others — aims to make the Humber the world's first net-zero industrial cluster by 2040. While headline projects focus on hydrogen and carbon capture, the pathway to net zero requires every business in the region to decarbonise its own operations.
Commercial solar is the most accessible, fastest-to-deploy decarbonisation measure available to Humber businesses today. No planning delays, no emerging technology risk, proven ROI.

Oh Yes! Net Zero: 170+ Hull Businesses
The Oh Yes! Net Zero campaign — founded by Hull City Council, Reckitt, the University of Hull, and Future Humber — has built a coalition of 170+ active members, including 7 of Hull's 10 largest businesses, collectively employing over 56,000 people.
The campaign provides free carbon clinics for SMEs, net zero workshops, and a peer-to-peer support network. For many member businesses, rooftop solar is the single most impactful first step in their decarbonisation journey — delivering measurable emission reductions alongside immediate financial returns.
Key Partners Driving Change
Hull City Council
Declared Climate Emergency in March 2019. Carbon Neutral Pathway targets net zero by 2045. Has contracted rooftop solar on 12 public buildings and secured £700,000 for further installations via the Hull & East Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Reckitt
Invested £105m in a Science & Innovation Centre on Dansom Lane employing ~800 people. Committed to net zero by 2040 across all operations. Major employer driving supply chain decarbonisation.
University of Hull
Home to the Aura Innovation Centre at Bridgehead — a £12m facility offering 50% innovation grants up to £30,000 for clean energy projects. Leading research into offshore wind, hydrogen, and energy systems.
Siemens Gamesa
£310m blade factory at Alexandra Dock employing 1,400+ people. 90% recruited from the Humber region. Supply chain of 500+ businesses creates a web of companies already aligned with clean energy.
How Commercial Solar Fits In
While headline decarbonisation projects — hydrogen production at Saltend, carbon capture at Drax, offshore wind manufacturing — operate on multi-billion-pound timescales, commercial solar delivers immediate, measurable impact for individual businesses:
Scope 2 Reduction
Every kWh generated on-site directly reduces your Scope 2 emissions. A 100kW system eliminates approximately 20 tonnes of CO2 annually — measurable and reportable from day one.
Supply Chain Requirements
Major employers like Reckitt and Siemens Gamesa increasingly require supply chain partners to demonstrate decarbonisation progress. Solar is tangible proof.
Carbon Reporting
SECR (Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting) and ESOS Phase 3 require qualifying businesses to report energy use. Solar directly reduces the figures you report.
Financial Returns
Unlike other decarbonisation measures, solar generates positive ROI from year one. 15-22% annual returns mean your net zero journey pays for itself.
The Humber's Energy Advantage
The Humber is already the UK's Energy Estuary, generating nearly 20% of the country's electricity:
- Handles a third of UK refined fuel and 20% of natural gas imports
- Supports 17,000+ energy sector jobs (5.1% of regional employment)
- 80% of North Sea offshore wind farms within 12 hours' sailing
- Port complex handles 77 million tonnes of cargo worth £75 billion annually
- Green Port Hull has supported 421 businesses and created 1,282 jobs
- 500+ businesses in the offshore wind supply chain network
Getting Started
Whether you are an Oh Yes! Net Zero member looking for your first carbon reduction project, a manufacturer meeting supply chain requirements, or a business simply looking to cut energy costs — commercial solar is the logical first step.
YEERS operates from Hull city centre (Blanket Row, HU1 1TB) and has installed systems across every major industrial estate in the region. We understand the Humber's energy infrastructure, Northern Powergrid's local network capacity, and the specific building types across Hull's commercial property market.
